Katra is the base camp for the pilgrimage to the Vaishno Devi temple, and it is well-connected by various modes of transportation. Here's how you can reach Katra:

By Air:

The nearest airport is Jammu Airport (Satwari Airport), which is approximately 50 kilometers away from Katra. You can take a flight to Jammu from major cities in India and then proceed to Katra by road.

By Train:

The nearest railway station is Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra Railway Station (SVDK). It is well-connected to major cities in India. Regular train services operate to and from Katra, making it a convenient option for pilgrims and tourists.

By Road:

Katra is well-connected by road to various cities in North India. Regular bus services, both private and state-run, operate from cities like Jammu, Delhi, and Chandigarh to Katra.

By Helicopter:

Helicopter services are available for those who prefer a quicker and more convenient mode of transportation. The helicopter service operates from Katra to Sanjichhat (near the Vaishno Devi temple) and can be booked in advance.

By Trekking:

Many pilgrims choose to trek from Katra to the Vaishno Devi temple. The trek is approximately 13.5 kilometers and takes about 4-6 hours, depending on one's pace. The path is well-lit, and facilities like resting points, shops, and medical aid are available along the route.

By Pony or Palanquin:

For those who may find it challenging to trek, ponies and palanquins (a type of carriage carried by porters) are available for hire. These services provide an alternative means of reaching the temple for individuals with physical limitations.

Here are some notable places to visit in and around Vaishno Devi:

ArdhKuwari:

Located approximately halfway on the trek to the main temple, ArdhKuwari is a cave where Mata Vaishno Devi is believed to have hidden for nine months while escaping the demon Bhairon. Devotees often stop here to pay their respects.

Sanjichhat:

Situated at a higher altitude, Sanjichhat is a scenic spot offering panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. It is a common resting point for pilgrims and serves as a base camp for the helicopter services to the Bhairon Temple.

Bhairon Temple:

After visiting the main Vaishno Devi temple, some pilgrims also make the trek to the Bhairon Temple. It is believed that the pilgrimage is considered complete only after visiting the Bhairon Temple.

Charan Paduka:

This is a rock impression that is believed to bear the footprints of Mata Vaishno Devi. It is located on the mountain, and devotees often visit this spot to seek the blessings associated with the goddess's divine footprints.

Himkoti:

A small, picturesque location on the way to Vaishno Devi, Himkoti offers beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and the valley. There is a small temple dedicated to Goddess Vaishno Devi here.

Ban Ganga:

This is the place where Mata Vaishno Devi is believed to have taken a bath before starting her journey to the Trikuta Mountains. Pilgrims often take a ritualistic bath in the holy water of Ban Ganga.

Banganga Temple:

Located near the Ban Ganga, this temple is dedicated to the goddess. Pilgrims often stop here to offer their prayers.

JhajjarKotli:

It is a scenic spot with a waterfall and is known for its natural beauty. Pilgrims often take a detour to visit JhajjarKotli during their journey to or from Vaishno Devi.
